If you are new to online casino games and still learning about the different types of casino games, you have probably come across some new terms. Knowing the casino lingo when playing casino table games will not only help you understand the game better, but will also allow you to enjoy live casinos online with other players. A to Z Casino terms




Action - The total amount of money wagered (put into action) by a player during their session.


All-in - When a player bets all of their chips at once during a poker game.


Ante - A small bet made by players before a hand is dealt.


Arm - A term used in craps to specify a highly skilled player.




Baccarat - A casino table game which played between a player and a banker.


Banker - The dealer in card games, who is responsible for paying out winnings and collecting lost bets.


Bankroll - The amount a player is willing to spend during a session, or the total amount he has to wager over a specified period of time.


Bet – The amount played or wagered.


Betting Limits - The minimum and maximum amounts of money a player can wager on a bet.


Blind Bet - In poker, a bet placed without the player seeing any of their cards.


Blinds - A forced bet in Hold'em poker game.


Bonus - money that could be given to you for free for various reasons, such as when you register at an online casino.


Bump - To increase your bet.


Burn card - The card taken from the deck by the dealer before one or more board cards are revealed in poker.


Buy-in - The amount required to participate in a table game or tournament.




Call - To match the current bet amid a poker game.


Casino Hold'em Poker - A card game based on Texas Hold'em Poker, in which players bet against the casino rather than against other players.


Chase - Trying to win back money after a losing bet or losing streak.


Check - An action in poker where the player stays in the game without betting on their hand.


Chip - usually in the form of round plastic discs of different denominations used to place bets.


Cold - A player on a losing streak.


Craps - A casino dice game.


Credits – In online casinos, bets are expressed in credits.


Croupier - The dealer in Baccarat and Roulette.




Dealer - The casino employee who shuffle the cards during a card game.


Deposit – A payment made to an online casino to play casino games on its platform.


Double or Nothing - An even money bet that pays exactly the amount wagered.


Drop - Money collected from the dealer that was lost during a game and now belongs to the casino.




Edge - An advantage over an opponent.




Face Cards - The jack, queen and king of each suit.


Face Down - A card that is dealt face down without revealing its value.


Face up - A face up card whose value is revealed.


Firing - A player who wagers large sums of money.


First Base - The dealer's leftmost position in blackjack.


Flat Betting - A way of betting where the same amount is wagered on each bet.


Flop - The first three community cards in Hold'em and Omaha poker, all dealt simultaneously, face up.


Fold - Losing the hand, a term used primarily in poker.




George - A player who generously tips dealers.


Gross winnings - The total payout including your stake.




Hand - Refers to the cards you hold during a game.


High Roller - A player who bets high.


Hit - drawing an extra card during a game of blackjack.


Hole Card - This refers to the face down card dealt to the dealer in blackjack and the face down cards dealt to each player in stud and hold'em poker.


House – A casino or gaming center.


House Edge - The mathematical advantage the casino has over the players.


House Rules – The playing conditions imposed by the casino.





Inside Bets - A roulette bet placed on a number or set of numbers, rather than betting on the winning color or whether the winning number will be even or odd.


Insurance - A side bet proposed when the dealer shows an ace in blackjack.




Jackpot - A large jackpot or one-time win.





Ladderman - The casino employee who oversees baccarat play. During this game, two dealers sit together in the middle of the table, a caller stands at the table across from the dealers, and the ladderman watches the action from a chair above the table.


Low-Roller - A player who makes small wager.




Match Play – A competitive system used in card-based tournaments in which two participants play a series of matches that only end when one player has accumulated the required number of points.


Multiplayer Casino - A feature offered by online casinos that allows you to play against other players.




Natural - The blackjack or baccarat cards that automatically win.


No-Limit - When a player can bet all of his chips at any time, usually seen in poker.


Nuts - The best possible hand in poker, baccarat or blackjack.




Odds - The statistical probability of winning or losing a bet expressed as a fraction or percentage.


Out - A card that improves a player's hand.


Overlay - Opportunities that benefit the player more than the house.




Pass - Fold decks of cards.


Payout - The amount of money paid out to the player if they win.


Playing the Rush - A poker term that refers to players who play more loosely or aggressively after a big win in order to keep winning.


Pocket Cards – Also called hole cards, these are the cards dealt face down in poker.


Poker - A strategy-based card game that offers a variety of variations including Texas Hold'em, Seven-Card Stud, Omaha, Razz, Lowball, and Pineapple.


Pot - The amount of money raised during a poker game when each player ante, bets and raises. The pot goes to the winner of the hand.


Probability - A mathematical calculation that determines the probability of an event occurring.




Quad - Four cards of the same rank in poker.


Qualification - The minimum rank a hand must have in order to enter the pot during a game of poker.




Rank - The value of a deck of poker cards.


Roulette - A casino table game that uses a spinning wheel with numbers from 1 to 36 on which players bet on the possible landing of the ball.


RNG - Refers to a random number generator, a computer program used by online casinos to generate a random result.


Royal Flush - The five highest cards of the same suit - 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace; the best possible hand in poker.





Shark - A highly skilled player.


Shuffle - Card shuffling techniques used to prepare a deck for play.


Steam - A term used in blackjack when a player becomes frustrated with the severity of events in a gaming session. Similar to going tilt in poker.


Stud Poker - One of the two basic forms of poker and the other is draw poker.


Suit - One of four card types: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades.


Stand - Draw no more cards.


Straight Flush - Five sequential cards of the same suit in poker.




Topping Out - Losing your entire gambling bankroll and having to stop playing.


Tell - Subtle clues that a player unknowingly gives that can be used to determine if they have a good or bad hand.


Three of a kind - Three cards of the same rank. Also called "trips".


Tilt - A term used in poker to indicate a state of frustration, usually after a big loss, in which a player begins to make emotional decisions and employs suboptimal strategy.


Toke - Short for "token" - a tip given to the dealer in the form of money or chips.


Tournament - A competitive game between a group of players over a period of time.





Underlay - A bad or unfavorable bet.




Vigorish - The edge, fee or casino commission collected by the house.


VIP – A very important person. Usually a big player.




Wager – Another term for a bet or stake.


Wild card - A joker or other predetermined card that can be used to replace of any other card to complete your hand in card games.


Wild Royal Flush - A royal flush that uses a joker.
